OCR vs Image Translation: What's the Difference?

By ScanText Team ยท 4 min read ยท 2026-09-22

OCR and image translation are related but distinct tasks. OCR (optical character recognition) extracts text that is already in the image's language and produces editable text in that same language. Image translation does OCR first, then translates the extracted text into a different language.

OCR: Image to text

OCR reads text from an image and outputs it as editable text in the same language. For example, an image containing English text becomes English text you can copy and paste. A photo of a French sign becomes French text.

Try image to text

Image translation: Image to translated text

Image translation performs OCR to read the source text, then translates it into your chosen target language. For example, an image containing Urdu text can be translated to English. The result is text in the target language, not the source language.
