How to Extract Text from a Screenshot

By ScanText Team · 5 min read · 2026-09-03

Text embedded in a screenshot is just pixels. You cannot highlight it with a cursor, so OCR is needed to recognize the characters and let you copy or edit them.

Phone screenshots

On phones, screenshots are captured at the device's native screen resolution. This usually produces sharp, readable text. Upload the screenshot as a JPG, PNG, or WEBP file and the OCR engine will extract the text in your browser.

Website screenshots

Website screenshots taken with your operating system's snip tool or browser extension are ideal when the text is at normal size and not zoomed out. Capturing at full screen resolution preserves the most detail for OCR.

App screenshots

Interface elements such as menus, buttons, and labels can be read, but very small text or anti-aliased fonts may need a closer crop or higher zoom level before capturing.

Error-message and chat screenshots

These often contain short, high-contrast lines of text. They are usually easy to extract. Crop away the surrounding interface chrome to help OCR focus on the message.

OCR limitations for screenshots

Screenshots with standard interface fonts usually work well. However, OCR may struggle with anti-aliased text, very small fonts, color-coded interface elements, or text placed over busy backgrounds. Always verify the output before using it for important purposes.
