Arabic Image to Text: How Arabic OCR Works

By ScanText Team ยท 6 min read ยท 2026-09-22

Arabic image to text uses optical character recognition (OCR) trained on the Arabic script to read visible Arabic words in a photo, screenshot, or scanned document and turn them into editable Unicode text. The extracted text preserves right-to-left (RTL) direction, Arabic letter shapes, and ligature forms as proper Unicode code points.

What Arabic OCR is

Arabic is written in a modified script that flows right-to-left. Letters change shape depending on their position (initial, medial, final, isolated), and commonly combine into ligatures like lam-alif. Arabic OCR models are trained to recognize all these forms and produce logical Unicode text order (not visual order).

RTL text handling

The extracted Arabic text displays right-to-left in the result box. The underlying character order is logical (storage order), not visual order. When you copy the text, Unicode directionality markers are preserved so it renders correctly in any Unicode-aware application. No manual reversal is needed.
